Preschool: 3 to 5 Years Old

The preschool years are an exciting time for young children. As infants, they developed a trust of their caregivers. As toddlers, they began to establish some independence. Now, as preschoolers, they use this trust and independence to actively explore new forms of play and new environments.

Preschoolers are curious and full of questions. When allowed to be free and live at their own pace, they are natural scientists with minds constantly in search of “why.” Preschoolers enjoy poking, exploring, experimenting, creating messes, taking risks, making mistakes, and trying again. Through this process they learn about cause and effect, problem solving, resiliency, persistence and how to interact with the world around them.

Preschoolers also love to engage in dramatic play, or pretend play, which is particularly important for their development. As children's thinking skills improve during the preschool years, they can remember and tell stories that follow a sequence of events and make sense to others. Pretend play is a great way for children to learn and develop skills such as planning and organizing, expressing emotions, recalling information and events, creating and interacting with the people around them.

Beyond Kindergarten Readiness

At Cornerstone we are not just preparing children for the transition to kindergarten, we are preparing them for life. We allow children to acquire important life skills at their own pace, using methods that appeal to them, in a flexible classroom environment that can adjust to their current needs and interests.

Our curriculum is thoughtfully planned, challenging, engaging, developmentally appropriate and focused on meeting the needs of the whole child. All aspects are designed with our core values and key philosophical influences in mind.

Research shows that children who are confident, resilient, have the ability to self-regulate and can communicate well are not only successful in school, they are successful in life. Our preschool program focuses on helping children acquire these vital social and emotional skills in a supportive and age-appropriate environment.

At Cornerstone we believe preschool is a time for mistake-making, risk-taking, laughter-sharing, mind-expanding, and independence-growing.
